Osteoarthritis

It is very frequently seen orthopedic problem. It mostly affects middle aged & older age group patients. There is degeneration of joint, leading to breakdown of joint cartilage. This leads to pain & inflammation. Common sites are knee, hip, spine & hands.

Causes

  • Primary: Denovo disease exact cause is not known.
  • Secondary: Trauma, infection, deformity. There is wear of cartilage leads to rubbing of bone ends & leads to formation of bony growths called osteophytes. This limit is motion.

Risk Factors

  • Advancing age
  • Extra weight/obesity injury to joint heredity.

Symptoms

  • They are gradually progressive joint pain, stiffness, reduced joint mobility crackling/grinding feeling in joint.
  • Diagnosis physical examination & X-ray.

Treatment

  • Lifestyle modification:
    • Exercise
    • Weight loss
    • Heat therapy
    • Physiotherapy
    • Medications
    • Using adaptive equipments like stick.

Surgical

  • High tibial osteotomy.
  • Arthroscopy.
  • Joint replacement.
