Blood Transfusion

It is a very common medical procedure in the practice of modern medicine. In this transfusion of either whole blood or its component such as blood cell or plasma, clotting factors.

Pre-requisite

  • The donor shall be free of disease.
  • They have not donated blood within the previous 90 days.
  • Hemoglobin level must be above 12 gm%

Collection

Done in the laboratory, collected in a sterile container containing anticoagulant solution. Details should be mentioned. The donor blood is immediately placed in refrigerator, stored at 1 to 6 Degree Celsius.

  • Articles required are Povidine Iodine, cotton swab, medicath, tourniquet, gloves, sterile blood transfusion set with filter, IV Stand.
  • Put medicath with sterile precaution and start transfusion via IV Line.
  • Transfusion is stopped in between if any sign of allergy is observed.
