Clinical Research & Its Scope

The branch of healthcare science that refers to all research carried out on human beings (healthy or sick people) is known as Clinical research.

It primarily focuses on improving the knowledge of diseases, determining the safety and effectiveness of medications, developing diagnostic methods and new treatments or medical devices designed for human use to ensure better patient care. This involves human participants and helps translate lab research into new information and treatments to benefit patients. Clinical researchers are the ones who design, implement and monitor clinical studies designated for clinical development. They work directly with, or use data from patients to carry out research and to develop new treatments.

In the present scenario, Clinical research is an attractive sector for researchers in India and has the potential for growth and job opportunities in the near future. Moreover, with the participation of multinational companies in Indian clinical research, the industry is anticipated to grow and open up avenues for employment.

There are various types of Clinical researches. Some of them are

  • Treatment Research Generally involves an intervention such as medication, new devices, or new approaches to various surgeries and therapies.
  • Prevention Research Explores better ways to prevent disorders from developing or returning
  • Diagnostic Research Refers to the practice of developing better ways to identify a particular disorder or condition.
  • Screening Research Aims to find the best ways to detect certain disorders or health conditions.
  • Genetic Studies Aim to improve the prediction of disorders by identifying and understanding how genes and illnesses may be related.

Phases of Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are a kind of clinical research designed to evaluate and test new interventions. Clinical trials are often conducted in four phases. The trials at each phase have a different purpose and help scientists answer different questions.

Phase I trial

Researchers test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people for the first time. The researchers evaluate the treatment’s safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify side effects.

Phase II trial

The experimental drug or treatment is given to a larger group of people to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety.

Phase III trial

The experimental study drug or treatment is given to large groups of people. Researchers confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments, and collect information that will allow the experimental drug or treatment to be used safely.

Phase IV trial

Post-marketing studies, which are conducted after a treatment is approved for use by the FDA, provide additional information including the treatment or drug’s risks, benefits, and best use.

Institutional Ethics Committee

  • The Institutional Ethics Committee of JNU Hospital, works as per the guidelines of ICMR, GCP and New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019 and is registered under CDSCO.
  • The main objective of the IEC at JNU Hospital is to closely review and approve all types of research proposals involving human participants with a view to safeguard the safety, rights, dignity and well-being of all the actual and potential research participants.
  • The committee in JNU Hospital has thirteen members and is multidisciplinary and multi-sectorial in composition.
  • All the members of the Committee follow the provisions of Good Clinical practices guidelines and other regulatory requirements to safeguard the rights, safety and well-being of the trial subjects.
  • It is noteworthy that the two hallmarks of the IEC are independence and competence. The Chairperson of the Committee is from outside the Institution in order to maintain the independence of the Committee. The other members are a mix of medical/non-medical, scientific and non-scientific persons including people from the public to reflect the different viewpoints.
